Sarah Thébaud is a sociologist who investigates how micro-level social psychological processes, together with societal-level institutions, reproduce particularly persistent forms of gender inequality in the economy. Recent and ongoing projects examine how organizational norms and practices and stereotypic beliefs about men’s and women's traits and abilities matter for understanding phenomena such as men’s overrepresentation in entrepreneurship, science, and engineering, gendered patterns of hiring and workplace authority, and the household division of labor. Her work employs multiple methodologies, including experimental studies, large-scale survey analysis, cross-national comparisons and in-depth interviews, and has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, among others.
