TMP Innovator Stories

This quarterly series features leaders from academia and industry who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields. Featuring appearances by prominent academic researchers, business professionals, and successful entrepreneurs. This series gives UC Santa Barbara students an opportunity to learn directly from individuals who have excelled through innovation and dedication to their work. Innovator Stories is part of the TMP 111 Issues in Technology, Business, and Society course curriculum.

Al Ferrer President/ CEO of Linea Consulting - November 6, 2018

Al Ferrer is the President/CEO of Linea Consulting, a multi-national Major League Baseball interpreter provider. Linea also researches, analyzes, interprets and presents advanced sabermetrics. Clients have included the Los Angeles Dodgers, Angels, New York Yankees and the top sports agents in the country.

Al is currently a professor emeritus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. In his role as professor, he developed and implemented the highly successful Sport Management Program. Dawn Solér Senior Vice President, TV Music, ABC Studios - November 13, 2018

As a music supervisor and executive on such films as The Big LebowskiSweet Home Alabama and Dead Man Walking, Dawn Solér joined ABC Studios in 2006 to bring her extensive film experience to the world of television. Once there, she established a full-service music department that manages every musical component on all of its shows -- the hiring of music supervisors and composers, budgets and integrating music from programming into marketing.

She created the network's Music Lounge website to further expose songs featured on such musically rich series as Code BlackOnce Upon a TimeBlack-ish and showrunner Shonda Rhimes' powerhouse slate of Grey's AnatomyScandal, and How to Get Away With Murder. Read More...

Dafina Toncheva U.S. Venture Partners - November 27, 2018

Dafina Toncheva invests in emerging technologies in the enterprise space with focus on Enterprise SaaS applications and security. Dafina joined USVP in 2012 and has led investments in and joined the boards of, Apptimize, Luma Health, Arkose Labs and Raken. Most recently, Dafina served on the board of Prevoty, a leader in application security, who was acquired by Imperva for $140M where USVP was the lead investor and largest shareholder.

Prior to joining USVP, Dafina was a principal investor with Tugboat Ventures since 2010. Before that, she spent two years at Venrock helping to expand the firm’s investments in SaaS, virtualization, security, infrastructure and enterprise applications. Dafina led the first institutional investment round in Cloudflare which has since transformed into one of the most successful Internet security startups in Silicon Valley.  Read More...

Peter Biggs- Historical Figure December 4, 2018

**UCTV Lost Voices Series**

Peter Biggs will be portrayed by Jarred Webb. Following a Q&A session with Daniel Lynch who wrote his Dissertation on Peter Biggs. 

According to historians Kendra Field and Daniel Lynch, "Biggs (was) a man who experienced a remarkable transition from slavery to freedom a decade before the outbreak of the Civil War. Born enslaved in Virginia around 1820, Biggs lived and labored in Los Angeles between the late 1840s and his murder in 1869. As one of only twelve people in Los Angeles marked 'Black' on the 1850 U.S. Census, he was also the only one listed with a surname and living in a home of his own. Read More...
