Speaker Biography:

Mark Sylvester, CEO and Co-Founder of introNetworks and Ambassador for 805connect.com

Since 2003, when introNetworks deployed a social network for the renowned TED Conference, the company has successfully created hundreds of introNetwork Communities across a global customer base.

Mark has been on the leading edge of software development for more than twenty-five years. As a co-founder of Wavefront Technologies, Mark and his team developed software that completely revolutionized the way the world is entertained. He co-designed Wavefront’s flagship product, Advanced Visualizer, which was the first commercial 3D modeling and animation system.

Working directly with major Hollywood studios, the company introduced the world to computer-generated animation and received many accolades – including several Sci-Tech awards and an Oscar for Technical Achievement.

As a TEDster for over 25 years and Executive Producer of TEDxSantaBarbara, Mark is constantly looking for ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’ and believes that helping people make smarter connections is definitely one of those ideas.

Mark's primary professional interest is in helping organizations connect to their audiences - internal and external.   Over the past 18 months, he has been working on a project called Pangaea, leading a team embedding AI in a mobile app that connects 12,000 employees of the original Ad Agency J Walter Thompson.  He is also Ambassador for 805connect, host of 805conversations Podcast, and Executive Producer of Strategic Samurai.

Mark has been a Chef since he was very young. He is still cooking and using the kitchen as a metaphor for many, many things. Mark believes EVERYONE should be adept in the kitchen. Even geeks.  His other personal interests include raising Monarch butterflies (he launched 70 last season) and Cymbidium orchids.

Technology Management's Distinguished Speaker Series is one of the program's premier events. This quarterly series features leaders from academia or industry who have distinguished themselves as experts in their fields. Drawing from prominent academic researchers, experienced business professionals, and successful entrepreneurs this series gives UC Santa Barbara's students as well as the community the rare opportunity to learn directly from those who have excelled through innovation and dedication to their work.
