The EAT (Executive-at-the-Table) meetings provide a unique opportunity for TMP students to enjoy a casual lunch and conversation with an engaging and influential entrepreneur or executive. Within this intimate setting our mentors share business advice and anecdotes from their own experience.
Peter O. Johnson, Sr. graduated from University of Wisconsin, Madison with a B.B.A. and continued his education by going through the Graduate Owner/President Management Program and the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University. From there, he founded the consumer finance company and direct marketing-distribution of House of Wares, Hy Cite Corporation in 1961. He held the position of Founder, Owner, and CEO until he retired in 1999 and his two sons presently manage the company.
In 1974, he purchased a technical services, printing and bindery company that had gone bankrupt, Omni-Graphics, in 1974 and resold it eight years later. In 1990, Johnson founded Tetrionics, Inc, a contract manufacturing and pharmaceutical drugs, where he was the owner and CEO. He sold Tetrionics, Inc in 2004.
He currently owns Winning Streak, LLC, a Thoroughbred horse breeding/racing company, which he founded in 2006. He resides in Montecito, California with his wife Ellen K. Johnson.
Dr. Herbert E. Paaren is a synthetic organic chemist with extensive research and administrative experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Dr. Paaren received his Ph.D. in “Steroid Photochemistry” at the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1976. As a NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the lab of Prof. Hector DeLuca, he developed numerous novel synthetic procedures for the manufacture of biologically active forms of Vitamin D. Over the last 30 years Dr. Paaren has been a named inventor on 15 patents and has published 27 articles and abstracts related to his research. Many of these patented processes became the foundation for the business venture Tetrionics, Inc.
Tetrionics was incorporated in 1990 with Peter O. Johnson Sr., Dr. Paaren and Prof. Hector DeLuca as founding partners. Tetrionics specialized in FDA approved contract manufacturing of high potency Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API’s). The company was acquired by Sigma-Aldrich in 2004 and Dr. Paaren retired from his position as Vice President of Process Development the following year. In 2009 Mr. Johnson and Dr. Paaren became angel investors in the company Cardiavent which was focused on developing a novel Vitamin D analog for cardiovascular indications. Cardiavent has yet to execute an exit strategy.
Herb now spends his summers in Spring Green, WI and his winters in the Beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, CA. To quote an old DuPont advertising slogan “Better Living Through Chemistry”!
