The MTM Career Services team works one-on-one with students to guide them throughout their academic and career journey. After graduation, many students go on to work within the thriving local technology sector at such companies as Procore, Apeel Sciences, and Appfolio. Over 90% of graduates have offers within 6 months of graduation. 50% of graduates enter project and product management and development after graduation.

The Master of Technology Management is designed for motivated, early-career professionals; however, no experience is required. MTM's diverse cohort of 45-50 students is reflective of today’s multidisciplinary business teams. Technology Management is defined as the strategies technology-driven companies employ to effectively manage the challenges and opportunities created by innovation, technological disruption, and organizational change. At the core of Technology Management are five Key Factors (Innovation-driven, Multi-disciplinary, Agile, Business Fluent, and Human Centric) that leaders must assimilate into their business practices in order to adapt to change, continuously innovate, and drive competitive advantage. These serve as the foundation for the Master of Technology Management curriculum.

Those early in their careers can find it particularly challenging as they prepare for leadership roles on projects, products, and teams. UC Santa Barbara's Master of Technology Management offers motivated early-to-mid-career professionals the essential business knowledge and entrepreneurial mindset to navigate their careers and expand leadership opportunities within technology- and innovation-driven firms. 

The  MTM program is a STEM-designated degree. However, it does not require a STEM background. Candidates should have sufficient quantitative experience/skills (e.g., math, statistics, accounting, economics, finance, etc.) to thrive in the program. The MTM program is eligible for a 12-month optional practical training (OPT) after graduation based on your student visa. Additionally, the MTM program is eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension after that. You can learn more about the OPT extension here

 

Our admissions objective is to assemble a multi-disciplinary cohort of qualified, motivated, early-to-mid-career professionals and recent graduates whose experiences, interests, and academic and interpersonal strengths will bring unique skills and perspectives to the program.

The MTM cohort comprises students with backgrounds in STEM as well as the social sciences. The MTM Admissions process is also comprehensive/holistic. We look at all factors in your application, including academic credentials/achievements, professional work experience, and personal experiences, to help us build a diverse cohort and enriching experience for our students.

Be sure to utilize ALL aspects of your application to tell us why you are well suited for the program and how you will contribute to your own, as well as the cohort’s, success. Historically, an average of 90% of our students have jobs within 6 months after graduation. In 2021, it was 100%.  The majority of roles are in technology product and project management,  engineering management, program management, and in related support roles such as sales, customer success, and marketing. Outcomes partly depend on the economic conditions and an individual's job search efforts.

We strongly encourage applicants to apply early. In particular, international applicants should apply by December 1, 2023 to allow sufficient time for visa requirement processing if admitted. Separately, UCSB Housing begins accepting graduate campus housing applications in early March 2024, which are generally contracted on a first-come, first-served basis and fill up quickly.
