Michael-James (known as M-J) has extensive Leadership, Business and Engineering expertise. This was gained during his 20+ year career with BP where he rose to senior level leadership after holding various technical, business and management roles in Scotland, Angola, Alaska, Egypt, London and Texas.

During his career in Oil & Gas M-J developed a distinctive capability in Strategy and Performance Management by working closely with BP’s senior executive in their St James head office and subsequently leading the Performance Management group for BP’s Gulf of Mexico assets. M-J has also led BP’s Subsurface R&D team and is deeply familiar with all aspects of intellectual property management and the challenges of successfully taking an idea from concept to commercialization.

After traveling the globe M-J chose to settle in Santa Barbara to raise his young family. He enjoys sharing his knowledge by teaching in UCSB's Technology Management Department, mentoring teams in the New Venture Competition, sitting on several local boards and running his own consulting LLC. He’s an active member of the local paragliding community, an avid cyclist and has a passion for environmental stewardship and the development of UCSB’s next generation of graduates.
