E.A.T. Success with Entrepreneur Donna White

TMP Student Blog by Dillon Blair

I had the pleasure of attending the Executive-at-the-Table (E.A.T.) with Donna White back in late October. Even though I currently don’t have any interest in starting my own company, I thought I could benefit from simply listening to what she had to say, and boy did I ever.

First, Donna was extraordinarily humble for someone who has achieved so much success. I think it really stemmed from her roots back in Illinois as a 20-year-old who had to support herself and survive on her own. She explained to us how she would use to go the library in Downtown Chicago (before the days of the internet) and read books until 3 or 4 A.M. to try and better herself.

She then went on to hold several different positions for traditional business companies, only to redefine and remake every job position she held. Although she was making a decent living, the entrepreneur inside her still felt that there was something missing from her professional life.

She found herself when she started her own company, August Venture Talent, and has been living her dream ever since. Donna was truly inspiring to me because she redefined herself and her career while raising a family during the height of the economic recession. She knew what she wanted and she wouldn’t stop until she got there.

Along with her story, she also gave us some valuable tips about what she looks for in a potential employee that I will always remember:

  1. Have an outward passion for learning
  2. Don't be afraid to make mistakes
  3. Confidence in yourself and your abilities

Last, I loved how personable she was and constantly thought how I’d love to work for someone like her one day. Donna is a unique lady and it was a pleasure listening to her speak at the E.A.T. event.
