MTM Student Veteran and Beyond

Meet Paul Malone, a two-time Gaucho who wears many hats. Paul graduated in 2015 as a College of Creative Studies Biology major, but he wasn’t ready to leave Santa Barbara quite yet.

He enrolled in UCSB’s Master of Technology Management program (MTM), which prepares passionate engineers and scientists to pursue careers in technology ventures.

In addition to being one of 21 students in MTM’s inaugural graduating class of 2016, Paul brings a unique background and set of skills to the table. He is one of UCSB’s student veterans, enlisting after high school and dedicating six years to the United States Army. It was here that he discovered his passion for biology; after taking a course taught by a surgeon overseas, Paul applied to study Biology at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies. In this program, he expanded his interests, thanks to some exceptional faculty such as associate professor John Lee, professor Susan Derwin, and professor Cherie Briggs. These individuals opened doors for Paul, from teaching him how to enjoy writing, to giving him an opportunity to work as a lab technician.

Paul also became president of the Student Veterans Organization (SVO), using his leadership skills to take the club in a positive direction. He saw a need for greater representation and better resources for student veterans, so he headed the effort to expand the SVO into a vibrant group with a strong on-campus presence. Leading this organization has not only provided Paul with support and friendship, but it’s also opened his eyes to the needs of his community. “I didn’t know how broad my community really is,” he said. “It was a humbling experience for me to look back and realize that I had to serve all of these different people.”

After graduating in June, Paul and his girlfriend will be moving to Charleston, South Carolina, where he will pursue a career in the tech field. He hopes to dive into product management, using the skills that MTM has taught him to build technology-based items and services. Combining what he has learned about diversity within the SVO, Paul is driven to create products that can benefit many.

His advice to Gauchos? “Don’t wait to pursue your dreams.”

Wishing you the best of luck, Paul!
