Open to UC Santa Barbara undergraduates from any major, the Undergraduate Certificate in Technology Management provides a path for motivated students to gain an understanding of entrepreneurial and business practices in emerging and global technology-driven companies. The certificate program consists of 16 required units. Required coursework is a combination of UC Santa Barbara coursework and a course taught through UCSB Professional and Continuing Education (formerly known as UCSB Extension). The program can be completed over junior and senior year.

Courses taken through UCSB Professional and Continuing Education (Extension) will not count as units towards qualifying as a full time student for the quarter. To earn degree or unit credit for courses taken through UCSB Professional and Continuing Education students must, upon course completion, order an official transcript from Extension and have it sent to the UCSB Office of Admissions at Click here to show mail address. All Extension courses are letter-graded, but when transferred to your UC Santa Barbara transcript, these grades will not be factored into your GPA.

Courses & Scholarships

Prerequisites

A student must have upper-division standing in order to apply for the Technology Management Certificate.

In order to register for TMP124 and TMP 127, a student must have completed TMP 120 with a grade of B- or better.

Both TMP as well as UCSB Professional and Continuing Education (Extension) coursework must be completed in order to receive a certificate.

Required TMP Courses (12 units)

TMP 120 Fundamentals of Business Strategy - 4 units (GATEWAY course to TMP 124 and TMP 127)

Introduction to critical business principles and practices required by leaders for business success and societal benefit. Students will be exposed to key management theories, models and tools in strategy, finance, accounting, commercialization, marketing, and sales.

TMP 124 Principles of Marketing - 4 units 

Introduction to basic marketing concepts and how these concepts can be applied to any organization, particularly technology firms. Additionally, students will be introduced to how management of the marketing function within an organization is critical to the organization’s success.

Pre-requisite(s): TMP 120 with grade of B- or higher

TMP 127  Understanding and Managing Technology Organizations - 4 units 

Focuses on the important link between the business and talent strategy including talent value chain, recruitment/selection strategies for rewards/incentives, employee relations, leadership and team formation; conflict resolution, problem solving, and decision-making, importance of organization culture; culture diversity and global village.

Pre-requisite(s): TMP 120 with grade of B- or higher

Required UCSB (Extension) Course (4 units)

TMP 130F Fundamentals of Business Finance - 4 units 

Provides students with the essential tools to understand and analyze financial information and financing strategies for new ventures. Major topics covered include the analyses of financial information, sources of financing, valuation models, and deal structures particular to new ventures.

Scholarships

Young Innovator Scholars (Open to All Majors)

Through the generosity of an anonymous donor who is a successful entrepreneur and business leader, as well as a friend and alumnus of UCSB, the Technology Management Program is able to offer the Young Innovator Scholarship. This scholarship is open to students from all majors in both graduate and undergraduate programs, who have demonstrated some form of innovative passion and are active in the Technology Management Program. If you are creating something new or better in whatever you do, this is the scholarship for you.

Eligibility: Applicants must be either an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at UCSB,
in good academic standing and active in the Technology Management Program.
(MTM students are not eligible)

Criteria: The Young Innovator Scholarship criteria for awards include:
               - Graduate or upper division undergraduate student in any major (MTM students not
                 eligible)
               - Demonstrate innovative interest(s)
               - Show evidence of a strong academic record. Overall GPA must be at least 3.0
               - Demonstrate financial need

Deadline: November 10, 2023 

Notification: Winners of the Young Innovator scholarships will be notified in Winter Quarter.

Harold Frank Scholars (College of Engineering Majors Only)

Due to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Frank, the Technology Management Program is proud to offer a scholarship to support students completing their undergraduate or graduate degree in engineering who are active in the Technology Management Program.

Eligibility: Applicants must be either an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the College of Engineering at UCSB, in good academic standing and active in the Technology Management Program. (MTM students are not eligible)

Criteria: The Harold Frank Scholarship criteria for awards include:
               - Engineering undergraduate or graduate student
               - Demonstrate financial need
               - Show evidence of a strong academic record. Overall GPA must be at least 3.0
               - Demonstrate interest in entrepreneurship or technology management

Deadline: November 10, 2023 

Notification: Winners of the Harold Frank scholarships will be notified in Winter Quarter.
