Your Essential Guide to the F-1 Visa and I-20 Process, and Starting your UCSB Journey
Welcome to the Master of Technology Management (MTM) program at UC Santa Barbara! As you prepare for your journey, the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) is your key resource. This post summarizes the most important information for admitted international students from our recent session in March 2026 with Erin Nerstad (MTM Executive Director) and Christina Carney (OISS Assistant Director, Student Services). Note that rules and procedures can change from year to year; make sure to review the OISS website for the latest information.
1. Navigating the F-1 Visa Interview
The F-1 visa interview is crucial and typically lasts only a few minutes. Prepare to demonstrate three main points:
- Student Intent: Clearly articulate why you chose UCSB and specifically the MTM program, and what you hope to gain from it.
- Financial Means: Show proof of your ability to support yourself throughout your studies.
- Ties to Your Home Country: Convincingly demonstrate your intent to return home after your studies. This can be through family, property, real estate, a business, or a guaranteed job.
Key Interview Tips:
- Be Yourself and Mature: The consular officers appreciate personable, mature students. Be natural and authentic.
- Avoid Reciting: Do not sound like a "robot" or recite scripted answers, as this is a red flag.
- Documents: Only bring and present documents (like scholarship awards) if the officer explicitly asks for them. Showing up with a stack of documents is generally advised against.
- Background Checks: Be mindful of your online presence. Consular offices perform heavy background checks, including social media. Deleting or turning off social media can be viewed as a red flag.
2. The I-20 Request Process
The first step after accepting your admission is to secure your I-20.
- Submit Your SIR: Formally accept your offer of admission here.
- Establish your UC Net ID and UCSB email: Visit the UCSB Identity Manager and select "I am…A New or Current Student with a Perm Number." More details are here, under Step 3.
- Wait for the OISS Email: Approximately 48 hours after submitting your SIR, you will receive a welcome email from OISS in your official UCSB email account.
- Complete the E-Form: Follow the link in the email to the UCSB Global system. You will need to submit:
- All your biographical information.
- A copy of your passport.
- Financial documentation proving your means of support for the year.
- Schedule Your Embassy Appointment Early: Processing times at UCSB for I-20s are being expedited. It is highly recommended to secure your embassy or consulate appointment as early as possible. Dates are known to get impacted, especially after June.
3. Mandatory Steps Upon Arrival in the U.S.
Once you arrive, there are a few time-sensitive immigration requirements:
- Log into UCSB Global (Within 5 Days): You must log back into the same system you used to request your I-20.
- Upload Required Documents:
- Your I-94 travel record.
- A copy of your I-901 fee receipt (a government fee connected to your I-20).
- Your F-1 visa stamp.
- Update Your Local Address: This is the most crucial step. You must indicate your local living address as it does not automatically transfer from other university systems. Failure to complete these steps and respond to OISS emails can lead to the termination of your I-20, requiring you to leave and re-enter the country.
- Open a Local Bank Account: The local Chase branch in Isla Vista (the college town next to student housing) is highly recommended as they are familiar with international students and you can walk in for service.
4. On-Campus Employment and OPT
International students have excellent opportunities for on-campus work experience and post-graduation work authorization.
| Category | Details |
|---|---|
| Work Hours (F-1 Rules) | Up to 20 hours per week while school is in session, and up to 40 hours per week during official breaks (Winter, Spring). |
| How to Find Jobs | Search the Career Center's Handshake platform (UCSB net ID required) for non-Work-Study positions. Dining Services is a common place to work with many openings, and those jobs are also helpful for practicing English skills. |
| MTM/Tech Mgmt-Specific Opportunities | The MTM program hires students for admissions support. The Technology Management department hires for Teaching Assistant (TA) positions (25% commitment = 10 hours/week, can be combined with other jobs). There are also internship opportunities housed at the university's research centers, often with industry partners, that are considered on-campus employment. |
| Social Security Number | To work on campus, you must request a letter from OISS, which you will then take to the Social Security office to obtain an SSN. |
| Optional Practical Training (OPT) | MTM is a STEM-designated program, meaning you are eligible for 3 years of work authorization (12 months initial OPT + 24 months STEM extension). |
| OPT Application | Step 1: Submit an OPT request form to OISS. Step 2: Submit the OPT application to the USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service) (up to 90 days before the program completion date). You do not need a job offer to apply, and early application is recommended as processing can take 4.5 months. Working on campus during the program does not reduce your OPT time. |
| CPT | Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is only available after the second year of study, so it does not apply to the one-year MTM program. |
5. Ongoing OISS Support & Community
The OISS office is dedicated to supporting your success throughout the program:
- Assigned Advisors: You will have an assigned advisor whom you can email, Zoom with, or meet in person during their daily drop-in hours.
- Immigration Services: OISS handles all immigration issues, including travel signatures (required if you leave the U.S. during the program) and support for your OPT/STEM OPT application.
- Community Events:
- Monthly Newsletter: Sent out with reminders and information on activities for international students.
- All Languages Exchange: A special program every other Thursday around 4:30 PM outside the Student Resource Building where you can practice languages with other students.
- International Student Party: A highly popular event at the beginning of the school year to mix and mingle with the large community of approximately 3,500 international students at UCSB.
If you have any further questions about your visa status, I-20, or individual circumstances, you can always reach out directly to OISS and schedule a personalized session with your assigned advisor through their website.
Next Steps from MTM:
- SIR Submission: If you haven't already, please submit your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) immediately to start the I-20 process.
- Interview Practice: MTM is happy to connect you with current international students to practice your visa interview statement. (MTM students will not be able to provide any official advice on the visa process or statement content. Contact OISS if you would like official guidance.)
- Cohort Connection: The MTM team will help you self-organize a WhatsApp or GroupMe chat group to connect with your cohort mates from different countries.
