Technology Management Welcomes New Faculty, Prof Nelson Phillips

UC Santa Barbara welcomes Nelson Phillips who joining the Department of Technology Management as a full professor. Phillips spent the past sixteen years as a faculty member at Imperial College in London, where he also served in various administrative positions, including associate dean of external relations and acting dean of the Imperial College Business School.

In a virtual or hybrid scenario, how do we ensure that people working from home are not overlooked for promotion and selection for choice projects? How do we mitigate against “out of sight, out of mind? Worries that working remotely will hurt your chances of getting promoted are warranted. In one 2015 study that randomly assigned a group of workers at a large Chinese travel agency to work for nine months mostly at home or full-time at the office, the at-home workers were about half as likely as their office counterparts to get a promotion.

2021 New Venture Competition Winners and Event Recap

Eel Armor takes the top prize at the 2021 New Venture Competition on May 20 with its "lightweight rifle armor made from a unique ceramic design that offers protection, safety and improved comfort to law enforcement officers and first responders." In addition to securing First Place, the team was also awarded the coveted "People's Choice" bringing their total winnings to $15,000. But all teams competing in the New Venture Finals walked away with accolades and a cash prize!

EEL Armor Wins 22nd Annual New Venture Competition

Pitching a lightweight body armor made from a unique ceramic design, EEL Armor won UC Santa Barbara’s 2021 Technology Management New Venture Competition (NVC) on Thursday, besting the five other finalists to close out the eight-month tech business plan competition and take home the $10,000 First Place Award. The 22nd annual competition was viewed remotely by people around the nation.

2021 New Venture Competition Finalists Announced!

On Thursday, April 29, 2021, UC Santa Barbara Technology Management's New Venture Program showcased 12 semi-finalist teams who emerged from a pool of 37 competing entrepreneurial ventures during its 22nd Annual New Venture Fair -- the first of two culminating events as part of the annual New Venture Competition. The entirely virtual Fair offered an audience of nearly 500 participants the opportunity to view team pitches, engage with teams via livestream video, and ask questions via online chat.

12 Teams Compete at 2021 New Venture Fair on April 29

Technology Management's New Venture Competition (NVC) is UCSB’s flagship entrepreneurial experience. Over the course of eight total months, students work in multi-disciplinary teams under the guidance of faculty and mentors as they address a business problem or opportunity and take their business ideas from concept to reality. The New Venture Fair is the first of two culminating events and this year, will highlight 12 teams that have worked diligently on their startup ideas for the past 7 months.
