Asst Professor Jessica Santana Awarded Prestigious Hellman Fellowship

Technology Management Assistant Professor Jessica Santana has been awarded the prestigious Hellman Fellowship from the Society of Hellman Fellows. Made possible by a $125M gift from the Hellman Fellows Fund, this endowed program provides research funding to promising assistant professors who show capacity for great distinction in their chosen field. Many Hellman Fellows go on to become department chairs, award-winning researchers, and MacArthur “genius” grant recipients.

Technology Management Awarded over $300,000 in Grants; Bovenberg to Lead Research

Funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has been granted to support research led by Ph.D. candidate Danielle Bovenberg. Bovenberg will lead the research overseen by principal investigator Stephen R. Barley, Professor of Technology Management, and her research aims to understand the contributions that people in specialized technical staff roles make to science.

Professor Paul Leonardi Appointed Chair of Technology Management Department

Technology Management Professor Paul Leonardi has been appointed Department Chair by UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering Interim Dean Tresa Pollock. Leonardi begins his appointment on July 1, 2022, and succeeds Professor Kyle Lewis, who has served in this capacity for the past five years. Professor Lewis will continue to conduct research and teach at the graduate level within the Technology Management Department.

Tech Mgmt Prof Mary Tripsas Named Distinguished Scholar

Professor Tripsas, a Professor of Technology Management in the College of Engineering at UC Santa Barbara, is a leading management scholar whose research focuses on the transformation of industries by new technology. Her important contributions have earned her the 2022 TIM Distinguished Scholar Award from the Academy of Management Technology and Innovation Management Division (TIM).

The event represents the culmination of the Technology Management (TM) Department’s rigorous eight-month technology-business-plan competition that is open to students from all disciplines at UCSB.

Technology Management Announces First Doctoral Placement at Univ of Cambridge

Virtual communities of practice invoke novel forms of boundary work that are newly visible via publicly recorded discourse and failure narratives. This boundary work has critical implications for occupational knowledge, membership, and stratification. Building on social exchange theorization of network gatekeeping, the author tests the assumption that centralized peers are more competitive gatekeepers, in that they react more negatively to remedial narratives.

Kyle Lewis Appointed Felipe Chair in Technology Management

Felipe established the chair in 2014 with a $1 million endowment that also helped launch the university’s first professional master’s degree program — the Master of Technology Management (MTM).
