Professor Paul Leonardi Appointed Chair of Technology Management Department

Technology Management Professor Paul Leonardi has been appointed Department Chair by UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering Interim Dean Tresa Pollock. Leonardi begins his appointment on July 1, 2022, and succeeds Professor Kyle Lewis, who has served in this capacity for the past five years. Professor Lewis will continue to conduct research and teach at the graduate level within the Technology Management Department. 

Metabowlite Wins 23rd Annual New Venture Competition

Pitching its optical technology for early detection of urinary tract infections (UTIs) to help save lives, improve health, and reduce costs, Metabowlite won UC Santa Barbara’s 23rd Annual New Venture Competition (NVC) Finals, taking home the $10,000 First Place Award. The event represents the culmination of the Technology Management (TM) Department’s rigorous eight-month technology-business-plan competition that is open to students from all disciplines at UCSB.

Technology Management Designated Department within College of Engineering

After more than 20 years under the auspices of UC Santa Barbara's College of Engineering (COE), Technology Management has officially earned the name and status of a Department — one of six in the College of Engineering. Technology Management was originally born out of the COE as a mentorship program to support innovative and entrepreneurial students. Today, TM is dedicated to multidisciplinary research and education informed by the engineering, information, and social sciences.

Kyle Lewis Appointed Felipe Chair in Technology Management

Chair established in 2014 by Christian Felipe with a $1 million endowment to the Technology Management Program. 

Kyle Lewis, chair of UC Santa Barbara’s Technology Management Department, has been appointed the Christian A. Felipe Chair in Technology Management. Felipe established the chair in 2014 with a $1 million endowment that also helped launch the university’s first professional master’s degree program — the Master of Technology Management (MTM).

2021 New Venture Competition Winners and Event Recap

Eel Armor takes the top prize at the 2021 New Venture Competition on May 20 with its "lightweight rifle armor made from a unique ceramic design that offers protection, safety and improved comfort to law enforcement officers and first responders." In addition to securing First Place, the team was also awarded the coveted "People's Choice" bringing their total winnings to $15,000.
